We believe in transformative education.

So we have transformed ourselves, once again.

The new Pueri Domus

CODING: BUILDING THE FUTURE NOW.

At Pueri Domus, bilingual education is the education of the 21st century. And technology is yet another essential pillar of forward-looking education.

We therefore seek to encourage students not only to acquire “digital fluency” (the ability to use technology as a language, fully mastering the use of its resources). We want to foster the use of new digital technologies as a means to enhance students’ learning and scope of knowledge.

And we strive to encourage them go a step further, creating their own coding to enable the most diverse kinds of experiments in the digital world.

The Coding program enters the curriculum at Pueri Domus in the 2nd year and follows through to the 9th year of elementary school, being yet another tool to prepare our students for this new reality.

Meanwhile, the successful development of this skill will stimulate other desirable skills, such as cooperative work, greater autonomy, critical thinking and entrepreneurial spirit.

These are traits highly appreciated in the current labor market, both in Brazil and abroad, regardless of the professional field of preference. Being prepared means having control over your future possibilities.

50 years of experience

A school driven by change, with over 5 decades devoted to education capable of promoting great transformations: such as your child’s life.

We at Pueri Domus are proud to be a school that was born with the future in mind. Fifty years ago, when the world was still debating whether children should have a voice of their own, students at Pueri Domus (Latin for “children’s home”) were already protagonists in the construction of knowledge.

We dared to elect innovation and diversity as pillars of our educational practice long before such concepts had become the aspirations of citizenship they are today.

And we stood out for valuing technology in the learning process. International recognition of this investment came in 2016 with our certification as an Apple Distinguished Program, a program developed by Apple to acknowledge pioneering and outstanding initiatives worldwide that use technology to further transformative education.

TWO INTEGRATED CURRICULUMS, A NEW WAY OF LEARNING.

Staying ahead in education requires self-criticism and readiness for change. We must expand our outlook, continuously reorganizing schedules and spaces to stimulate motivation, resilience and social-emotional intelligence in our students.

The changes in our curriculum aim to broaden the scope of students’ knowledge in all respects. The results will be reaped in the future, with distinctive traits that will further their personal development and insertion in the professional market.

To meet those challenges, we have divided knowledge into fields of experience, based on two benchmarks: the Competences provided in the National Common Curricular Base, defined by the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC); and, in order to prepare new citizens capable of interacting in a borderless world, we have also adopted the California Common Core State Standards, from the US.

However, we did not stop at overlapping these two strong benchmarks. They have allowed us to build a unique Bilingual Learning Framework, which has proved capable of meeting the official curriculum requirements of both countries.

Mainstream Education

A curriculum proposal to educate global citizens, with bilingual learning and a half-day schedule. Available only at the Verbo Divino Campus.

NOT AN EXTRA SUBJECT, BUT BILINGUAL LEARNING.

Bilingual learning goes far beyond mastering a second language.

As reported by some of the most reputable studies in developmental psychology, acquiring such skills at an early age helps expand cognitive capacity and develop attention and memory.

That happens regarding a child’s first language. When educational investment expands to bilingual learning, the main goal is to enhance that window of opportunity for intellectual growth.

Pueri Domus’s new program will teach by stimulating reasoning in a second language, not just teaching a new language. Therefore, knowledge related to logical reasoning, scientific information and historical awareness, among others, will also be acquired through reasoning in English. That is the main difference compared to traditional second language learning.

Implementing Pueri Domus’s new curriculum proposal goes beyond adding an extra subject to the program. It means rescaling the learning process of our students!

NEW STUDENTS, NEW NEEDS.

To build an efficient education project, it is essential to consider ongoing changes in the profile of students. After all, global transformations also deeply affect the individual behavior of children and adolescents.

In the world of instantaneity, what prevails is the present moment. Even the attention span has new limits which hardly exceed a few minutes. Discourses have been cut short to accommodate the parameters of virtual communication. At the same time, access to information content is virtually unlimited.

It is a paradigm to which current education must also adapt. The vertical and deeply hierarchical teaching of the past tends to become obsolete.

That is why Pueri Domus invests in the development of autonomy and the production of responsible and creative critical thinking. The focus is on learning to learn, from the earliest experiences of pre-school years to the completion of students’ education for life in high school, from where they leave prepared to meet the challenges of professional training.

CORE PROGRAM.

Nowadays, cognitive skills alone cannot ensure the efficiency of a learning project. Interaction between ethical values and social-emotional skills is increasingly indispensable. This is so relevant that the Program for International Student Assessment (Pisa) plans to assess students’ social-emotional performance already in 2021.

Such elements have always been part of the education provided by Pueri Domus. Our new curriculum, however, devotes even greater attention to the development of these skills.

Based on the best models and practices in this area, we have developed the Core Program, a curriculum proposal starting in the earliest years of pre-school education. Its objectives include fostering students’ self- knowledge and personal maturity, stimulating initiative and creativity, encouraging leadership attitudes and developing citizenship.

These main concepts will be addressed in a transdisciplinary approach, examined from the viewpoints of SELF (how I express myself and manifest my attitudes); SELF and OTHERS (considering aspects of social interaction); and SELF and the WORLD (expanding students’ commitment to the society in which they live).

DUAL CERTIFICATION.

The distinctive bilingual education offered at Pueri Domus expands students’ opportunities to take part in international academic programs. One of them, which is already in place in the Verbo Divino campus is the IB (International Baccalaureate), based on the best educational practices worldwide and recognized by universities in 139 countries.

The other is the High School program, which provides Pueri Domus students with an accredited American high school diploma thanks to the partnership with one of the largest educational institutions in the United States.

The emphasis of Pueri Domus’s new curriculum on bilingual education aims to expand students’ intellectual knowledge without neglecting the set of skills and abilities required by the Brazilian curriculum. For both sets of knowledge to be acquired simultaneously, the program is integrated and part of the content will be taught in the second language.

“HANDS-ON” LEARNING.

Another important principle of the education experienced by Pueri Domus students is the concept of integral education, which aims at their global development. To this end, the classroom is not the sole place of learning. Other settings are being remodeled to turn the entire school into a learning environment.

Integrating subjects across the curriculum also helps students apply concepts, fostering education from a practical approach, the so-called Hands-on Knowledge!

An evolution in promoting this educational principle is the Maker Space, which will be built with the active cooperation of students. This environment will initially be equipped with workbenches, tools, 3D printer and other resources to design projects. The idea is to enhance it over time with the students’ own suggestions, since there will be no restrictions to creativity.

It is they who, drawing on their creativity and the investigative capacity of their own knowledge, will determine the material resources necessary to execute their projects.

PREPARING THE NEW CITIZENS OF THE WORLD.

The curriculum change developed by Pueri Domus aims to provide all of our students with a bilingual education from an early age, preparing them, if they so wish, to engage in an international study experience at the end of their education in our school.

How will proficiency be individually assessed?

The acquisition of bilingual competence by our students includes internationally recognized assessments such as WIDA, the English Language Proficiency Assessment. Good performance in this specific exam opens doors for students interested in pursuing their studies in an English- speaking country. Pueri Domus has administered this exam since 2016, with a final report sent to parents.

In addition, as of 2017, our school is officially authorized to administer Cambridge Examinations. This is an optional exam, but all students will have the opportunity to take mock tests before the actual exam. Thus, we offer parents and students a preliminary assessment of students’ current level of proficiency in English.
